Small Business Presence in Other Countries

Dear Professor Bruce:

We own a small, specialized, travel business. We do a lot of business outside the U.S. with many organized groups who plan visits to the U.S. and we want a local (non-physical) presence in those countries. How can we do that easily?

According to Ari Rabban,  CEO of, “With many small companies now conducting business internationally, the options for communication have grown and adapted to the times”. In the past, small businesses working internationally had to either use expensive international rates, or develop a presence abroad. With new and convenient technologies, companies don’t need the hassle of expensive phone bills or creating an international office.  Small businesses are now able to maintain an international presence without a local presence by obtaining an international phone number.

An international phone number, obtainable anywhere, with an international country code makes it easier for communication across the globe. If, for example, you operate out of Boston and do business in Rome, you can select a local Rome number that will
ring to your Boston office. Callers from Rome an get a hold of your company at a local rate making communications an easy and cost-effective process.

Some international phone number providers also allow you to create an answering
service in other languages. If your business in Boston as a local Rome number tied to it, you can have an Italian answering message tied to the line.  Some providers are also able to route international calls to specific people in the company who speak the language. So if someone in your Boston-based business speaks Italian, international calls will be routed to him or her. Calls can also be routed to tablets, smartphones, home phones, etc., which makes working with various time zones a lot more manageable. Calls can be answered remotely from the office allowing calls from Rome to be answered without someone being physically present at the office.

Cost is another tremendous benefit from obtaining an international DID. For some providers, adding an international phone number service is less than $15 per month but
depending on the country, services can range as low as $5 per month.

International phone numbers are extremely helpful to small businesses by  saving them on long-distance calls and an international presence and allowing a versatile answering service that would typically be found in larger companies. If your company is looking for an easy method of conducting international business, this route is an optimal solution
for international communication.

I agree. In order to successfully manage any type of business relation internationally, I think utilizing this tool is something that potentially help out at least in the short run. However, with the rapid increase of technology, there may be a more effective way to approach this concept that we do not yet know of.
